International Conference held in São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Salvador and Fortaleza from May 9 to 16, 1994. The conference focused on managing problems of scale and complexity in China, the United States, Russia and Brazil, discussing questions of survival in large nations and the role of political and economic management of large populations on continental territories. Our conference received broad press and television coverage inside and outside Brazil, including a Russian TV documentary, Your Money or Your Life, focusing on problems of chronic inflation in Russia and Brazil and incorporating scenes from our conferences sessions and interviews with participants.
Speakers included these members of the Fernand Braudel Institute of World Economics: Brazilian Finance Minister Rubens Ricupero, president of the Fernand Braudel Institute of World Economics; Fan Gang, of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Professor Jeffrey Sachs of Harvard University, former economic advisor to Boris Yeltsin; Robert Putnam, director of Harvard´s Center for International Affairs and author of Making Democracy Work; Roberto Macedo, former Brazilian Secretary for Economic Policy; William McNeill, University of Chicago historian, author of the Rise of the West and Peoples; Aspásia Camargo, president of IPEA, the government´s economic reseaerch institute; Martin Mayer, financial journalist and scholar at the Brookings Institution; Peter Knight, former chief World Bank economist for Brazil; Norman Gall, executive director of the Fernand Braudel Institute of World Economics; Governor Ciro Gomes of Ceará State; and former Finance Minister Paulo Haddad.
